This Is National Anthem Day!
The Star-Spangled Banner is the national anthem of the United States. It was written by this man, Francis Scott Key. He had watched the Sept.13,1814 night time bombardment, by British forces, of Fort McHenry in Baltimore's harbor from a ship. The following morning, he saw that the American flag was still flying over the fort and that inspired him to write our anthem.
You might be surprised to learn, that many people think the Star Spangled Banner was written during the Revolutionary War. It was actually written during the war of 1812, which lasted until 1814.
This is a replica of the U.S. Flag at the time, featuring 15 stars and 15 stripes. The reason we celebrate on this date goes back to March 3, 1931. That's when congress made the Star-Spangled Banner our national anthem.
