Garth Brooks Dreams of Singing With Carrie Underwood’s Husband
Garth Brooks opened up the first of a whopping seven dates in Nashville on Saturday night (Dec. 9), and before taking the stage to a sold-out crowd at Bridgestone Arena, he and wife Trisha Yearwood answered some burning questions at a pre-show press conference. Some of them a little more unexpected than others.
When asked if the string of Music City shows would include any special guests, Brooks took a moment to muse about an unlikely choice he's been wanting to get behind the mic with for some time now.
"There’s a dream of mine that started with a Carrie Underwood post of her husband [retired NHL player Mike Fisher] singing 'The River' three years ago," Brooks related. "And I told him, come on, let’s finish it here!"
There probably aren't too many people out there who would turn down a chance to get on stage with Brooks, but Fisher apparently just couldn't get over his cold feet. "I bet you, the phone calls, there’s been a hundred of them," said Brooks, of trying to get Fisher to acquiesce. "'I’m heading out again...I'm heading out again...' Nope! He’s scared to death.
"I don’t think there’d be a better joy for me though," Brooks smiled. "You’re talking artists, I’m talking a kid who represents his talent great and classy, and has a pretty good singing voice too." (You can hear the commentary on Fisher for yourself in the video, starting at around nine minutes in.)
If you're skeptical of the claim that Fisher's voice is up to par, he has actually sang informally with Brooks before. In fact, his wife Underwood posted footage of it in 2016, grumpily commenting that it wasn't fair he got to sing with her idol. "I think I'll try to see if Wayne Gretzky wants to play a pick up hockey game sometime," she joked.
Underwood's complaint wasn't unwarranted: “I said, ‘You cannot sing with Garth Brooks before I do,’” she told Country Countdown USA. “When I was 10 years old I met Garth Brooks and said, ‘If you ever need someone to sing a duet with you, I’m your girl.’ So I’ve been waiting for that forever."
Whether Fisher had stage fright, or was just simply afraid of his wife, is unclear. We'll just have to wait and see if Brooks manages to get him on stage one of these days!
