Video of Dale Earnhardt Jr. Plane Crash and Fire Released [Watch]
Newly released video shows Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his family rushing away from a private jet before it becomes engulfed in flames. A man who appears to be the NASCAR racer and analyst is seen limping heavily before falling to the ground.
Video obtained by Fox 17 in Nashville starts after the plane crashed through a fence onto what appears to be a public road. Suddenly, a dog and several people pour out of the Cessna airplane. The first woman — in white — appears to be Amy Earnhardt, following by what looks like Dale Jr. in street clothes and someone else who is holding the couple's 15-month-old daughter, Isla Earnhardt.
The FAA confirms that five people were on board the aircraft when it crash landed, including two crew members. All were safe, aside from a few minor injuries. The plane crash occurred at Elizabethton Municipal Airport in eastern Tennessee at about 3:40PM ET on Thursday (Aug. 15).
Earnhardt and his family were flying to this weekend's NASCAR race at Bristol Motor Speedway, where the 44-year-old was going to be an analyst for NBC Sports. The network says that all parties agreed Earnhardt would take the weekend off to be with family instead.
Here is the official statement from the FAA, who along with the NTSB is investigating the accident:
A Cessna Citation rolled off the end of Runway 24 and caught fire after landing at Elizabethton Municipal Airport in Tennessee at 3:40 p.m. today. Preliminary indication is that two pilots and three passengers were aboard. Local officials will release their names and conditions. The aircraft registration is N8JR, look up the owner at FAA.gov. The FAA will investigate and the National Transportation Safety Board will determine probable cause of the accident.
