West Texas School District Shuts Down One Week into Classes Due to COVID

A school district in West Texas that started classes last week has now shut down due to COVID-19.
On Monday, the Iraan-Sheffield Independent School District, which is about 100 miles southwest of San Angelo, posted a letter to students and staff saying the district will suspend in person classes until August 30th.
Our ISISD Leadership Team has made the determination that we will need to quarantine for the next two weeks. This decision was made to ensure the safety of our students and staff; as well as to make certain that we have appropriate staff available for each campus. We are currently working with the ISISD team and TEA on alternative plans, if appropriate. If we are able to return sooner or provide additional at home support, that information will be forthcoming. However, at this time, we will not have virtual or remote learning. During this time, teachers and staff will be available daily via email.
Superintendent Dr. Tracy Canter encouraged students to quarantine during the time away from school.
This means that students and staff will quarantine only with immediate family. They should not be out and about in the community or hanging out with friends. The only way that this will work is if everyone does their part.
Although not specifically requiring them, the district is recommending the use of face masks and coverings according to the letter.
The Iraan-Sheffield ISD joins two other rural districts in the state to suspend classes early in the school year. Bloomburg and Waskom ISDs in East Texas made decisions to suspend some classes this week.
