Should the City of San Angelo adopt a new logo? What should be our “brand?” The public will decide!

Tuesday, the City Council approved a slate of 14 possible logos, including the current logo that has been used since 2003, for citizens’ consideration in an online survey. The survey was launched late Wednesday at cosatx.us/LogoSurvey. As of early Thursday, the survey had garnered more than 130 responses.

Public Information Officer Anthony Wilson pitched the possibility of a new logo, citing three benefits:

  • It could yield a more aesthetically pleasing brand that reflects the modern, forward-thinking community San Angelo is.
  • It provides an opportunity for corporate consistency, with all City departments using the chosen logo.
  • The logo chosen could also serve as the City’s official seal, again providing consistency.

“Plus,” Wilson added, “it’s a fun way to engage our citizens. Lately, we’ve heard lots of folks saying they’d like the opportunity to vote on this or that matter. Well, here’s your chance!”

The survey will be conducted through Jan. 2. Citizens can vote up to once per day. The winning choice will be announced at a City Council meeting early in 2016.

Wilson stressed no public dollars have been or will be spent on the effort. All of the designs were crafted by citizens who submitted them or by artists for McLaughlin Advertising, which has not charged the City for their works. If a new logo is adopted, it would be phased in as assets (vehicles, uniforms, letterhead) are retired or exhausted.

“We’ve also been asked if the City doesn’t have better things to attend to,” Wilson said. “This logo contest doesn’t – and won’t – preclude us from addressing important issues such as street improvements and water supply. And branding issues are one of the Public Information Office’s responsibilities.”
