The forecast is unbelievable.  We're just a few days into May, and the heat is on. We're looking at 4 days of temperatures above 100.  Saturday's high could reach 110 in some spots around town.  Next, week it "cools" to the upper 90's. Meteorologists have released the long range forecast for San Angelo and this part of West Texas for summer 2022.  Their forecast predicts the summer season will be under the continued influence of La Nina meaning a very hot and dry summer for West Texas and San Angelo.

The most important part of staying cool is out of ALL our hands.  It's the Texas power grid.  We all know it's had some problems.  Can we expect more when temperatures across the state push record limits this weekend?  The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) says they're already asking power plants across the state to postpone routine maintenance to brace for the heat wave.

Officials at the Public Utilities Commission of Texas which oversees ERCOT said they are working to ensure there is enough power to keep air conditioners cranking this weekend.  We predict there will be few problems for a simple reason: This is an election year.

Other important things to remember when temperatures are very high in San Angelo. Stay indoors in the air conditioning as much as possible. Drink plenty of fluids, even if you don't feel thirsty. Schedule outdoor activities carefully. And, make sure you take cool showers or baths to stay cool.  Even better, take a dip

Luckily, as we reported last week,  the Brown's Park  Pool is open weekends.  This pool is a beautiful place to cool off in the heat.

 

The Tule Princess Steamboat is a great weekend getaway. It always seems a bit cooler once you get on the cooler waters of Lake Nasworthy, A trip on this historic steamboat is a great way to beat the heat and have a great experience.

There also some great places in San Angelo to enjoy a cold treat. The Latest Scoop Ice Cream is a family owned ice cream shop and they have a lot of homemade treats to cool you down. Find them 37A West Concho Avenue in the heart of the historic district.

 

Stango's Coffee Shop is like a soda shop from the past. While they also serve pizza, coffee and other treats. They have great banana splits, ice cream and chocolate shakes. Find them at 221 S. Chadbourne Street.

Marble Slab Creamery at 4553 Sherwood Way is also a great place for a cold treat. Their ice cream is certifiably addictive. People come from miles around, and travel websites always recommend Marble Slab to San Angelo visitors.

Whatever you do, stay safe this weekend, and in the days ahead,  as we suffer through what is destined to be a long and intense summer.
