Casting Vote May Send Woman Back To Prison
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — A Texas woman facing a charge of illegal voting for casting a ballot in November's presidential election says she was unaware that Texas law forbids a convicted felon from voting while on probation.
Forty-one-year-old Crystal Mason tells the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (http://bit.ly/2mdpGvR ) she never would have voted if she knew it could mean a return to jail.
Mason previously operated a tax preparation business and pleaded guilty in 2011 to conspiracy to defraud the U.S. for inflating tax refunds claimed on behalf of clients.
She was on supervised release from prison when she voted in November.
Mason was arrested last month by Tarrant County authorities.
Tarrant is the same county where a Mexican national was sentenced last month to eight years in prison after being convicted of illegal voting.
