The Shannon Diabetes Management program received certification as an accredited program with the American Association of Diabetes Education (AADE).The AADE accreditation demonstrates the program’s commitment to the field of diabetes education by putting forth the time and effort necessary to become certified as an accredited program. The program has been operating for 20 years and was previously accredited by the American Diabetes Association.

“Diabetes is an on-going concern that affects more than 12,000 residents in Tom Green County,” says Dawn Empey, RN, CDE, program coordinator. “Our program offers specialized care for the management and treatment of diabetes. Our approach is individualized to address the very personal concerns that each patient has about his or her condition.”

Diabetes self-management education is a process led by a diabetes educator that helps people with prediabetes or diabetes learn how to self-manage their condition. The goal is to arm each person with the necessary knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about their diabetes. Accreditation ensures that each program meets the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support.
