The event will offer individuals and teams of all ages the opportunity to walk the first mile of the Walk Across Texas program as a part of the kickoff of the Mayor’s Wellness Partnership.  Attendees will also obtain health and wellness information from various local agencies/businesses.  Join the community to promote the importance of physical activity and participate in the Walk Across Texas program.

As a part of the event we are “Telling Hunger to Take a Hike” by encouraging everyone to bring individual packaged food items that will be used in the Kids Eat FREE summer weekend bags.  Suggested items would include individual packages of cold cereal, 100% juice, fruit cups, granola bars, pudding cups, cheese & crackers, popcorn, macaroni & cheese.

The Mayor’s Wellness Partnership was created as a Health & Wellness Task Group by the Tom Green County Hunger Coalition, a part of the Texas Hunger Initiative – San Angelo Regional office.  The task group meets monthly at Wellness Wednesday meetings to share information pertaining to promoting a healthier and more vibrant community.

The Texas AgriLife Walk Across Texas program is an 8-week program designed to help people of all ages support one another to establish the habit of regular physical activity. Individuals log their miles with the goal of each team to walking across Texas - 832 miles. What counts as a mile?

  • A measured mile on treadmill, track or other app/device
  • 2o minutes of activity =1mile
  • 2000 steps on a pedometer
  • Can use the equivalents calculator on the Walk Across Texas website

Baylor University’s Texas Hunger Initiative (THI) is a capacity-building, collaborative project, which develops and implements strategies to end hunger through research, policy, education, community engagement and community development. THI works to make the state food secure by ensuring that every individual has access to three healthy meals a day, seven days a week. THI convenes federal, state and local government stakeholders with nonprofits, faith communities and business leaders to create an efficient system of accountability that increases food security in Texas and beyond. Headquartered at Baylor University, THI has 8 regional offices located in Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Houston, Lubbock, McAllen, San Angelo, and Waco. At THI, Summer Meals program evaluation and outreach is funded by the Walmart Foundation.

The Kids Eat FREE Summer Meal program is a project of Tom Green County Hunger Coalition and sponsored by the Texas Hunger Initiative -San Angelo Region.  The program offers free lunch during July and August in various neighborhoods. Churches, nonprofit organizations, businesses and many volunteers partner to provide the meals and service for this program.  This will be the seventh summer to provide meals in San Angelo and Carlsbad.
