Hear Broadway Star Kristin Chenoweth Cover ‘I Will Always Love You’ With Dolly Parton
Broadway star and recording artist Kristin Chenoweth duets with one of her life-long idols, Dolly Parton, in her new, faithful cover of the country icon's classic "I Will Always Love You." Press play above to listen to Chenoweth's version of the song, flanked by backing vocals courtesy of Parton herself.
"'I Will Always Love You' is a song I've loved since I was a child," Chenoweth explains to ET Online. "I used to think, 'One day I'm gonna sing that song.' Little did I know that I'd get to sing it with the queen herself."
Parton isn't the only country royalty that Chenoweth joined forces with to create the songs on her just-announced seventh studio album, For the Girls, an assembly of re-interpreted classics by powerhouse female artists. Reba McEntire also lends her voice to the project, trading vocal lines with Chenoweth and singer and actor Jennifer Hudson on Peggy Lee's 1962 jazz-rock classic, "I'm a Woman."
Chenoweth explains that from the start, For the Girls was intended as a tribute to all the unforgettable women who blazed trails in the music business. "These songs have all stood the test of time, and most of them are songs that I grew up listening to," she continues. "It was a little intimidating, because people like Judy [Garland], Barbra [Streisand] and Dolly [Parton] are the people that made me want to be a singer in the first place. I wanted to pay homage to these women and do them proud, but I also wanted to put my own stamp on it. And I think I was able to do that."
Among the women honored in the new project is Patsy Cline: Chenoweth includes a rendition of the country legend's "Crazy" in the album's track list. Artists like Linda Ronstadt, Carole King and many more also appear in the collection of artists covered. In addition to Parton, McEntire and Hudson, Ariana Grande provides supporting vocals. Steve Tyrell, who produced the project, was instrumental in helping to shape and develop the story, Chenoweth adds.
"Steve and I are a match made in heaven," she gushes. "Not only is he an incredible singer and performer in his own right, but he has a wealth of knowledge of all music. He has a fantastic ear and kept reminding me, 'KC, you don't have to be perfect the first time!'"
Chenoweth goes on to say that she hopes the album will underscore the power of music to bring people together, no matter the genre or style. "I love to make records, because I love getting to say something through music on my own terms," she relates. "Music is such a powerful, healing force. Whether you like rap or opera or country, music is something that bonds us together. And we live in a time where music is really speaking to us. There are no more rules, and that's really inspiring to me, because there's no limit now."
For the Girls is due out on Sept. 27.
