Students completing the new program will be certified athletic academic advisors, and the certification will appear on their permanent ASU transcripts. The certificate program is designed to assist students seeking to enter the athletic academic advising career field, as well as current professionals seeking additional development and advancement. It is open to all students who possess at least a bachelor’s degree, regardless of the academic discipline.

According to the National Association of Athletic Academic Advisors (N4A), there are more than 1,000 athletic academic positions, and the market continues to increase as all levels of U.S. colleges and universities place more emphasis on the development and expansion of student-athlete services to enhance academic success, character development and community service. Since August 2016, more than 60 new job openings in athletic academic areas have been announced by the N4A and NCAA.

ASU’s new certificate program will prepare graduates for careers and/or advancement in a wide variety of athletic academic roles, including learning specialist, study hall coordinator, academic tutor or advisor, career development counselor, community outreach specialist, academic resource center supervisor and team scholastic supervisor, as well as related administrative and managerial positions. It will also give graduates an additional credential to demonstrate specialized experience to current and potential employers.

The curriculum for the certificate program can be completed totally online and will consist of five courses:

  • Athletic Academic Advising and Counseling (CSRF 6329)
  • Athletic Academic Performance Enhancement (CSRF 6341)
  • Special Topics: Student-Athlete Academic Services Administration (CSRF 6381)
  • Foundations of Academic Advising (EDG 6367)
  • Career and Occupational Counseling (EDG 6324)

The CSRF programs, including the new certificate, are components of the Kinesiology Department within ASU’s Archer College of Health and Human Services. More details on the certificate program are available on the ASU website at www.angelo.edu/athletic-advising-certificate.
