The ASU Choirs and Woodwind Quartet concerts are coming soon.

The Angelo State University Chorale and the San Angelo Community Chorale will present the annual Holiday Concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, at First United Methodist Church, 37 E Beauregard St. in downtown San Angelo.

Titled “A Celebration of Hymns & Psalms,” the free concert will be conducted by Dr. Pamela Lee, ASU’s director of choral activities since 1994. Guest performers will include the Central High School Chorale, Permian Basin String Quartet and soloists Patti Wetzel, soprano, tenor John Triplett and baritone Mark Cooper, all alumni of ASU’s vocal music program.

The concert will include Felix Mendelssohn’s setting of Psalm 115, as well as “How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place” by Brahms, “Laudate Dominum” by Mozart, “The Heavens Are Telling” by Haydn, “The Lord is My Shepherd” by John Rutter and “Chichester Psalms” by Leonard Bernstein.

The program will also feature favorite hymns arranged by Mack Wilberg, music director of the famed Mormon Tabernacle Choir. His stunning arrangements of the traditional hymn “All Creatures of Our God and King,” spirituals “Down to the River to Pray” and “Peace like a River,” and community favorite “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing” offer widespread appeal.

The CHS Chorale, conducted by Landon Gilmore and Sunday Vaught, will perform two holiday selections, then join all the singers for a finale featuring Rutter’s rousing arrangement of “When the Saints Go Marching In.”

Angelo State University’s Woodwind Quintet will perform a Woodwind Chamber Recital at 7:30 p.m. this Thursday, Nov. 19, in the Carr Education-Fine Arts (EFA) Building, 2602 Dena Drive.

The performance will be in the EFA Building’s Eldon Black Recital Hall and is free and open to the public. The quintet is made up of students Rebekah Arana-Cook of McCamey on flute, Braden Weinmann of San Angelo on oboe, Mario Cardenas of San Angelo on clarinet, Alfredo Bonilla of Veracruz, Mexico, on bassoon and Chris McKowen of San Angelo on horn. The director is Dr. Jeff Womack, associate professor of music.

The challenging musical program will feature two woodwind quartets in addition to standard woodwind quintet literature, including a suite by English composer Gordon Jacob, the beautiful “Pastorale” by Igor Stravinsky, “Passacaille” by French composer Adrien Barthe, and three Brazilian choros, one of which will be the popular tune “Tico-Tico.” The quintet will conclude with “Overture to The Barber of Seville” from Rossini’s opera.

Also performing will be The Mesquite Trio, made up of ASU’s woodwind faculty, Dr. Constance Kelley on flute, Dr. Timothy Bonenfant on clarinet and Womack on bassoon. The trio will perform works by Bach, an arrangement by English-born American composer Christopher Weait of an American folk song, “Bow, Bow, Bow Belinda,” and Bonenfant’s arrangement of Claude Debussy’s “Petite Suite.”
