KGKL Pick’em Contest – Bobcats score 71 in opener; Abilene schools fall hard

Anytime the Central Bobcats and El Paso Franklin Cougars get together, there is a chance for an instant classic. From a 1 point Central loss in 2012, to the five-overtime Bobcat win in 2011, these two teams have been a part of some great games over the years. Friday night was no exception, with Mickey Scott and the Bobcat offense putting together a game for the ages.

When the final second clicked off the scoreboard, the Bobcats had amassed a whopping 71 points, and Scott had accounted for 7 touchdowns. Not that this was a blow out. Franklin’s offense was up to the task as well, rolling up over 670 all-purpose yards and scoring 55 points. But Scott and the Bobcats were too much in the end.

Next Central faces the Menlo Knights. Menlo comes to us from Atherton, CA where they play in the Central Coastal Section.

While San Angelo might be celebrating, our friends to the north in Abilene are licking their wounds after a tough start to the season. With Cooper falling to Wichita Falls Rider in what was one the better games of the weekend, and Abilene High and Wylie getting blown out, the Abilene schools will look to bounce back this weekend. But it won’t get any easier for them this week with Copper playing the #1 ranked 4A team and Abilene High playing Duncanville from the DFW area.

Other big scores this week include Robert Lee welcoming in the boys from Meeteetse, WY and pulling out the win 68-50.

And the game that was the head-to-head pick’em challenge between myself and my new co-host/producer Jeff Jackson…Water Valley v. Grandfalls-Royalty. As I predicted, Water Valley scored a huge opening win over a state-ranked team. The final score was 32-20, and I now lead Jeff 1-0. Click HERE for all local scores.

KGKL 2013 PICK'EM CHALLENGE

Speaking of the Pick ‘Em challenge…I like to invite you to show me your high school football knowledge. Or your ability to tell the future. Either way you could win prizes!

Here’s how it works:

Every Monday I will post the games to pick. I will choose 3 local games. There will be a favorite and an underdog, based on Max Preps state rankings.

To play, you need to submit your picks along with your name and e-mail address (so that I can contact you when you win your free stuff).

For every correct pick you get 1 point. Also. If you correctly pick an underdog to win, you get an additional 1 point. I will also choose one of the games for a tiebreaker. When you submit your picks, also give me your tiebreaker final score. Each week the person who has the most points and the closest final score will win $100 gift card from Chili’s Bar and Grill and one additional point.

At the end of the season, the person who has the most points will get a Dinner for 4 at the Chili’s Bar and Grill, with the option of having KGKL and the Scoreboard Show DJs join you. Don’t worry, we won’t eat your free dinners.
