A runoff election for mayor and for the Single Member District 1 and 5 seats on the City Council will be conducted Saturday, June 15. All registered voters in the city of San Angelo will be eligible to cast ballots in the mayor’s race; registered voters in SMDs 1 and 5 will also be able to vote in those respective races.
During the May 11 Council election, no candidate in the three races won a majority of the votes cast. The candidates on the June 15 ballot are:

  • Mayor – Kendall Hirschfeld and Dwain Morrison.
  • SMD 1 – Rodney Fleming and Trinidad Aguirre Jr.
  • SMD 5 – H.R. “Winkie” Wardlaw III and David McBride.

The drawing for the order of names on the runoff ballot will be May 21.

The terms are two years for mayor and one-year unexpired terms for SMDs 1 and 5. Current Councilmen Paul Alexander and Councilman Hirschfeld will continue to serve in the SMD 1 and 5 seats, respectively, until their successors are elected, the votes canvassed, and oaths of office administered.

In last week’s election, Marty Self, Don Vardeman and Charlotte Farmer won two-year terms in SMDs 2, 4 and 6, respectively. They will be sworn into office at the May 21 City Council meeting.

Early ballots can be cast from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 3-7 or from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 10-11 at any one of five locations:

  • Edd B. Keyes Building, 113 W. Beauregard Ave., second floor.
  • River Place Apartments, 501 S. Irene St.
  • Victory Christian Center, 1620 Sunset Drive.
  • Assembly of God Church, 1442 Edmund Blvd.
  • Plaza del Sol Apartments, 4359 Oak Grove Blvd.

Early voting and election day polling location information is also available on the City’s website at cosatx.us/elections.

All registered voters in the city are eligible to vote in the runoff, regardless of whether they voted in the May election. The deadline to register or change voter registration information is Thursday, May 16. Any registration or change must be postmarked by May 16 to be eligible to vote in the June runoff election.

Voter registration applications are available at the Tom Green County Election/Voter Registration Office on the second floor of the Edd B. Keyes Building, 113 W. Beauregard Ave., and at all three Tom Green County library locations.

Registration applications can also be obtained by calling (325) 659-6541. Completed applications can be returned in person or by mail; mailed applications must be postmarked by Thursday, May 16, to be eligible to vote in the June runoff. Citizens can also register to vote when renewing their driver’s license in person at a Texas Department of Public Safety office; to be eligible to vote June 15, that must be done by May 16.

Ballot by mail applications are being accepted by the county Elections Office. Ballots will not automatically be mailed to voters who requested and received ballots in the May election unless voters checked the square indicating they wanted to receive a ballot for a runoff. If voters are unsure if they requested a ballot using this method, they should call the election office at (325) 659-6541.

Votes from the runoff election will be canvassed and winners sworn into office on June 25.
