Birthdays For November 18th + National Vichyssoise Day

Best wishes to you, if you are celebrating today.  It was nine years ago today that the movie, "Walk The Line", the Johnny Cash biopic, opened in theaters nationwide.  Actor Joaquin Phoenix had the starring role, Reese Witherspoon, played June Carter Cash, Shelby Lynn, had the role of Johnny's mother and Shooter Jennings played his late father, Waylon Jennings.   It's National Vichyssoise Day!!

You may be asking yourself, "What in the world is "vichyssoise"? and "How do you pronounce it"?

First of all, it is pronounced:  vish - e - swaz.  Yeah, it's French!

Second of all, it's a cold soup.  It's made with pureed leeks, onions, potatoes, cream and chicken stock.  Traditionally, it is served cold, but some folks enjoy it better when served hot.  So, it's pretty much left up to the individual.

Louis Diat, a French chef, at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, in New York City, is the man who gets the most credit for this menu item.  He started making it for the patrons of the Ritz, back in the summer of 1917.  That's probably why it is best known as a cold soup.  However, there have been recipes found for a soup that is very similar to Vichyssoise, dating as far back as 1869.  So, who knows for sure?

I would think with the weather as it is here in the Concho Valley today, you might want to heat it up.  Maybe even add some good ole, Texas hot sauce!  Either way, enjoy!
