ASU ACS Wins Green Award!

Angelo State University’s student chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) has received a Green Chemistry Award from the national ACS Green Chemistry Institute for the chapter’s outreach activities during the 2012-13 academic year.
This marks the third straight year the ASU chapter has received the Green Chemistry Award from the national ACS.  The ASU group and other award-winning chapters were honored at the 247^th ACS National Meeting last week in Dallas.  They have already been highlighted in the Green Chemistry Institute’s e-newsletter, The Nexus, and the Chemical & Engineering News weekly ACS magazine.

The ASU chapter was recognized for its participation in at least three green chemistry activities during the 2012-13 academic year.  “Green Chemistry” is a movement that encourages the design of processes that reduce the usage of hazardous or environmentally unfriendly substances, encouraging the idea of sustainability in the chemical industry and in research.

Faculty sponsors for ASU’s student chapter are Dr. Edith Osborne, assistant professor of chemistry, and Kevin Boudreaux, senior instructor of chemistry.  Chapter president is senior Christian Herrera of San Angelo.

“Undergraduate students engaging with the principles of green chemistry today will be the scientists and professionals informing a more sustainable future,” said Dr. David Constable, Green Chemistry Institute director.  “The Green Chemistry Institute Governing Board commends faculty advisors, Mr. Kevin Boudreaux and Dr. Edith Osborne, for their exemplary guidance.  We also extend our warmest congratulations to the student chapter president, Christian Herrera, for setting such a fine example for other chapters and being an exemplary green chemistry ambassador!”
