ASU Flute Choir Concert:

The Angelo State University Flute Choir will present its annual spring concert on Tuesday, April 25, in the Carr Education-Fine Arts (EFA) Building, 2602 Dena Drive.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the EFA Building’s Eldon Black Recital Hall and is open free to the public. The musical selections range from a celebrated waltz to heritage and novelty pieces.

The program will include “The Blue Danube” by Johann Strauss, one of the most famous waltzes ever written, and Katherine Hoover’s “Celebration,” an arrangement of bytes from several well-known pieces for flute. The Flute Choir will also perform “Air” from J.S. Bach’s “Suite in D Major,” the Overture to Mozart’s “Marriage of Figaro” and the novelty piece “Serendipity” by Ann Cameron Pearce.

The Flute Choir is open to all students, regardless of their academic major, and regularly performs with the ASU Woodwind Quintet and in community outreach efforts. Performers for the spring concert include current and prospective ASU student musicians Rebekah Cook, Thalia Hernandez, Miki Roche, Christina DeForest, Jade Rocha, Gage Kelling, Trystian Galindo, Jisoo Lim and Monica Perales. The choir is directed by Dr. Constance Kelley, associate professor of music.

Water Valley H.S. Student Receives Top Scholarship to ASU

Tyler Hoover, a senior at Water Valley High School, has been awarded a Distinguished Carr Scholarship worth up to $60,000 to attend Angelo State University this fall.

The Distinguished Carr Scholarship is ASU’s most prestigious scholarship for academic achievement. To recognize Hoover for his accomplishments, ASU will conduct a Carr Signing Day event at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 25, at Water Valley High School. Hoover plans to major in health science professions at ASU and has also been accepted into the ASU Honors Program.

Carr Scholarships are renewable for four years and range in value from $1,000 to $15,000 per year. Scholarship awards are based on high school grade point average and standardized test scores on the ACT or SAT college entrance exams. Fewer than 10 Distinguished Carr Scholarships are awarded to new incoming students per year, providing each recipient with $15,000 annually. To be selected for the top award, students must score at least 32 on the ACT, 1400 on the old SAT or 1450 on the new SAT; maintain a high school cumulative GPA of at least 3.5; and interview with ASU administrators.

Other 2017 Carr Distinguished Scholarship recipients are Jane Bacon of Victory Christian School in Albuquerque, N.M., Rachel Beggs of Brentwood Christian School in Austin, home school student Phyllis “Kate” Creecy of Corinth, Christina Hamilton of Hebron High School in Carrollton, and Douglas Newcomer of Denton High School in Denton.

Carr Scholarships are funded by a $130 million endowment, one of the largest in the nation at a regional university. Robert G. Carr and his wife, Nona K. Carr, who bequeathed their interests in oil, gas and other minerals from producing properties in West Texas, made the Carr Foundation possible.
