Wes Anderson Announces Next Movie, ‘The French Dispatch’
Wes Anderson is back. Fox Searchlight announced today it had acquired the rights to release Anderson’s next film, which will be his tenth feature. It is titled The French Dispatch.
The press release includes the following plot synopsis for the film.
THE FRENCH DISPATCH is a love letter to journalists set in an outpost of an American newspaper in a fictional 20th-century French city and brings to life a collection of stories published in “The French Dispatch” magazine.
Anderson’s cast is typically stacked; it already includes Benicio Del Toro, Frances McDormand, Jeffrey Wright, Adrien Brody, Timothée Chalamet, Léa Seydoux, Tilda Swinton, Mathieu Amalric, Lyna Khoudri, Stephen Park, Owen Wilson, and Bill Murray. (Of course.)
Anderson has released five his last six films through Fox or Fox Searchlight. (The one exception was Moonrise Kingdom, which wad distributed by Focus Features.) His last feature was 2018’s stop-motion animated Isle of Dogs, which grossed $32 million in the U.S. That was significantly better than Anderson’s other animated feature, Fantastic Mr. Fox (which grossed $21 million in the U.S. in 2009), but barely more than half of what Anderson’s 2014 film, The Grand Budapest Hotel made in theaters. ($59.3 million) That remains Anderson’s biggest picture to date.
The French Dispatch will be released in 2020.
