It was just unveiled at Comic-Con and it is full of surprises; the first full trailer for Star Trek: Picard, the long-awaited return of Patrick Stewart (and Jean-Luc Picard) to the universe of Star Trek for the first time since the end of the Next Generation film series almost 20 years ago.

And the show itself is set 20 years after those events, and features some major surprises. Data is “dead” due to the events in Star Trek: Nemesis, but the appearance of a young woman looking for help, sends Picard back into space for the first time in decades. The Borg are back and so is someone no one expected to see — Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine from Star Trek: Voyager. It’s an interseries crossover!

Here’s the show’s official synopsis:

The Journey is Far From Over. Debuted at San Diego Comic Con during the Star Trek: Universe panel in Hall H, watch the 2019 SDCC trailer for Star Trek: Picard, starring Sir Patrick Stewart, coming early 2020 exclusively to CBS All Access.

It’s kind of weird seeing Stewart as an old, slightly feeble Picard, although he does appear to get his mojo back by the end of the trailer, firing a phaser and “Engage!”-ing with his new crew. Either way, it’s awesome to see him back in the captain’s chair— and to see Ryan (and Spiner, maybe playing a hologram of Data, or perhaps as Data’s “brother” B-4). Consider us very excited to check out Star Trek: Picard on CBS All Access in early 2020.
