Work has started on the low water crossing near McDonald's on Southwest Boulevard in San Angelo. The city of San Angelo says the road work will take approximately 2 months forcing the closure of the road according to the city's official Facebook page.

This work will take approximately 60 days, pending any potential weather delays. During this time, access from the Loop 306 frontage road to Green Meadow Drive and the rest of the Southland neighborhood will be closed. Access to the businesses will still be available from the frontage road. Southwest Boulevard is open from Green Meadow Drive to Twin Mountain Drive.

The road work is part of an overall street project of drainage improvements and reconstruction that is expected to take two and a half years.

This low water crossing has been a known problem for some time; extensive flooding occurs in this area because of the current drainage system, resulting in damage to the roadway.

The choice to begin this section of the project on June 1 centered around school being out for the summer.

The City of San Angelo official web site reports the project will cost 5.9 million dollars. The entire project will cover Southwest Boulevard from Twin Mountain Drive to the Houston Harte expressway frontage road.

The Southwest Boulevard project is one of three active street projects for the city. Other projects include the downtown Chadbourne Street project and the Bell Street project. Those two projects are projected to cost 29.6 million dollars as detailed on the city's web site.
