National Cowboy Day at Fort Concho

Celebrate National Cowboy Day at Fort Concho on Saturday, July 23, beginning with a classic cowboy breakfast at 9 a.m. followed by performances by the Concho Cowboy Company.

The activities will be in the Barracks 5-6 Courtyard on Henry O. Flipper Street on the fort’s northeast corner.

Created 15 years ago to honor the heritage of an American icon, National Cowboy Day is marked in many western states. Fort Concho has hosted the local celebration for more than 10 years. The tasty breakfast of sausage, eggs, biscuits, hash browns, juice and coffee costs $10; seniors will be charged $9 and Fort Concho members $8.

There is no charge for the skits by the award-winning Concho Cowboy Company. After the program, the American Plains Artists Show will be opened at 10 a.m. in the nearby Quartermaster Building.

“Cowboys are among the best-loved American figures, and they played a key role in the development of San Angelo and West Texas,” Fort Concho Manager Bob Bluthardt said. “In one morning, you can eat like a cowboy, enjoy some cowboy entertainment, and then view some inspiring painting and sculptures that portray many western themes, including cowboys.”
