Summers in Texas can be a good and a bad thing. Yes, the heat is no joke and can sometimes make summer vacations miserable, but nothing makes me miserable like those tiny pesky mosquitoes thinking I’m a snack and biting me while I’m just trying to relax!

According to a new study by Casino Context, Texas ranks 7th in the nation for mosquito madness this summer. That’s higher than Alabama, North Carolina and Delaware. We’re basically hosting a mosquito music festival, and I’m ready to leave!!

We know everything’s bigger in Texas—Here’s why mosquitoes have taken that literally?

It’s not just because of our sweaty and record breaking summers or our famously dry spells (only 2.71 inches of summer rainfall), it’s also that these little bloodsuckers are everywhere—and Texans are freaking out.

Texas has over 1,230 mosquito prevention searches per 100K people, meaning we’re Googling everything from “DIY citronella candles” to “how the heck do I get rid of these darn mosquitoes?”

Here’s the good-ish news: our West Nile virus rate is 0.57 per 100K, which is lower than states like Mississippi and Nebraska. So while the bites are real, the health risk is less terrifying.

Still, Texans are over it. We’re swatting, spraying, and slathering on repellent left and right. (Or at least I know I am!)

So if you're stepping outside this summer, just know: it’s not just the heat trying to take you out. It's also the mosquitoes. So lather up on that mosquito repellant!
