The Measles Has Made Its Way To The Permian Basin
The measles virus has apparently made its way to Midland-Odessa in 2025. The virus itself dates back thousands of years (roughly 500AD). Back then it was often misdiagnosed as smallpox, but it wasn't until the 9th century that doctors gave it its own designation by differentiating that the two viruses were not the same.

The measles is part of the papamyxovirus family and is typically spread by entering the body through the body's respiratory system. Coughing and sneezing by someone infected with measles can infect any given area for several hours since the virus can linger in the air. This makes the chance of catching the virus in large crowds more likely.
In more recent decades, advancement in medicine had for the most part suppressed the virus. However, studies are indicating that it is making a comeback in the 21st century.
Recently, it was reported that a local infant was suspected of contracting measles in which test later confirmed to be positive. Unfortunately, in this scenario, the infant is too young to be vaccinated. There is concern that there may be other instances of measles in Ector County in the near future. However, it is still too early to tell.
Here are some symptoms of measles and how it can be treated.
Symptoms
In the early stages of Measels, you can experience red or watery eyes, high fever, cough, runny nose, and what is called Koplik spots. This is usually a strong indication of the measles. They appear as small white spots inside the mouth.
The next phase of measles is called the rash stage; where small patches of rash can develop on the face and spiral down the body.
The post-rash stage is equally as dangerous since the person infected can stay contagious for up to 5 days.
Treatment
Treatment is pretty straightforward. It is suggested to isolate yourself from any and everyone in quarantine and get plenty of rest. It is also highly suggested to stay hydrated. If the fever returns, then vitamin A supplements and over-the-counter fever suppressants can be taken.
