Houston, Texas just had an incredibly rough weekend with multiple shootings reported across the metro as the violence continued into the early morning hours today. Normally, it is during holiday weekends that a surge in attacks occurs, but clusters of elevated crime is bound to happen from time to time.

One of my favorite phrases that I say to not just my three children, but anytime there are a group of people acting foolishly is, "Can we please just not?" I happily encourage other parents, or people in a position of influence to please borrow the mantra, and lead others to make smarter decisions because it is so easy to not commit violence.

One thing that should not be accepted is victim blaming, but with each life event, we should always be prepared to use every experience as a teachable moment. For the life of me, I will never know why teenagers as young as 14 are out of their home and on the streets at 1:30 in the morning any day of the week, let alone on a Texas school night.
