Spread the Love Peanut Butter Drive in East Texas

(East Texas) The challenge is on East Texas! The East Texas Food Bank's Spread the Love Peanut Butter Drive is underway. The competition is brewing between Tyler and Longview to see which city can collect the most jars of peanut butter this month in an effort to help fight hunger in East Texas. The competition is now live and runs until September 24.

Why Peanut Butter Helps Fight Hunger in East Texas

September is Hunger Action Month. It is hard to imagine that thousands of East Texans face food insecurity. Food insecurity could be as close as your next-door neighbor. According to the East Texas Food Bank (ETFB), 1 in 6 East Texans, including 1 in 4 children, are facing hunger. That is a staggering fact when there are approximately 200,000 people in Tyler and Longview.

This marks the third year for the Spread the Love Peanut Butter Drive competition in East Texas. The friendly competition is currently tied, with a win for both Tyler and Longview. East Texans collected more than 8,000 pounds of peanut butter last year. David Emerson, CEO of the East Texas Food Bank, says that's enough peanut butter to stock the ETFB shelves for a year.

How the Tyler vs. Longview Peanut Butter Competition Works

Jars of peanut butter can be dropped off at participating Brookshire's, Super 1 Foods, and Fresh locations in Tyler and Longview. For added convenience, you may also purchase them online, and they will be applied to the appropriate city's total.

When Will the Peanut Butter Drive Winner Be Announced?

The East Texas Food Bank will tally the donations each week and post weekly results on its social media pages so residents can see which city is leading. The winning city will be announced on Monday, September 28.
