When a Texas woman noticed her 4-year-old daughter was screaming and crying during school pick up, she knew something was wrong.
It was just like any other school day when Marissa Braughton went to pick up her 4-year-old daughter from Smith Elementary School in Spring, Texas. When Braughton noticed her daughter screaming and crying, she quickly began to console her and figure out what was making her so upset.
“I get down to her level. I’m like, ‘Baby, what’s wrong? Tell Mama what happened.’ And she immediately is like, ‘The teacher hit me.’ I said, ‘The teacher hit you?’ And she said, ‘Yes, the boy teacher, the substitute teacher.’ I said, 'The boy teacher?' And she’s like, ‘Yes, mama. He hit me twice. And I heard my neck make a sound,’” Braughton said.
Now, this Texas mother is demanding answers.
“[They] messed with the wrong mama, that’s all I gotta say. I will not back down until this is figured out and until this is done,” Braughton said.
Braughton wasted no time, filing a police report and notifying the assistant principal, who assured her the situation would be addressed the following day. Still, she worries the process is moving too slowly and fears that if students are not asked what happened right away, the younger children may forget important details.

Spring ISD AFT Union Lawyer Chris Tritico assures that the school district is taking her report very seriously, but adds that the district is limited to what they can publicly share.
“That does not mean they’re not doing anything. It just means they can’t tell them that they’ve interviewed these students, who they are, and what they’ve told them,” Tritico said.
For now, Braughton has decided to homeschool her daughter, who's still traumatized from the assault.
“She’s four years old. No child, especially my baby girl, should have to go through this,” she said.
