Should Texas Tech Be Fighting Brendan Sorsby’s Battles?
There's going to be a lot here I don't know about, but that might be exactly why a different perspective is needed.
So here's the backstory as I understand it. This college quarterback was found to have bet on sports, including placing bets involving his own team and games where he was suited up. When he got to Texas Tech, his past problems surfaced, and he was put on hold while various courts and organizations fought over whether he should get to play or not.
So, does that give enough of an outsider's perspective for you?
I don't know NCAA rules or all the legal details involved. What I do know is that, even if the motivation is partly about having a winning football team, Texas Tech seems to be doing the right thing here. If this were any other type of addiction or personal struggle, you wouldn't think twice about people cheering that a university stood up for someone. To me, that's what family does, and he was invited to become part of that family.

Helping Someone Move Forward
I'll state the obvious too. Maybe this guy wouldn't be getting the same level of help if he was a third-string player. That's a fair conversation to have. But I still don't think it's ever a bad thing to lift someone up when they're down.
As of this writing, he has been reinstated and is able to play. That decision has caused problems with other teams in the league and the NCAA itself. From the outside looking in, a lot of that feels like performative outrage to me. It feels like some people are already building excuses and complaining about being beaten by Tech before the games even happen.
A Second Chance In Lubbock
So yeah, I think Texas Tech should be congratulated for stepping up for this guy — and hopefully they'll do the same for the next person who needs someone in their corner.
Everybody loves a comeback story. Sometimes you just have to give somebody the chance to write one.
