I can still remember walking into Robert E. Lee Elementary School here and quietly scanning the classroom to see how many other kids had the ash cross on their foreheads. If you grew up Catholic in Texas as I did, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Especially in Abilene, a city with so many churches.

That small, simple cross made from ashes meant something. It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t flashy. But it was powerful.

As a matter of fact, I, Rudy “Fearless” Fernandez, served as an altar boy until I was 18 years old. I was even awarded and knighted as the White Knight of the Altar. That experience shaped me in ways I still carry today.

Ash Wednesday isn’t just another date on the calendar. It marks the beginning of Lent, a season of reflection, discipline, and preparation leading up to Easter Sunday. And here in Texas, faith and family still matter.

What Ash Wednesday Means

For many Christians, Ash Wednesday is a reminder of humility and renewal. The ashes symbolize repentance and the understanding that life is fragile. The words often spoken are, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

That’s heavy. But it’s also hopeful. Because just days later, we begin the countdown to Easter, a celebration of resurrection, redemption, and fresh starts.

Easter Brings Texas Families Together

The moment Ash Wednesday arrives, I start thinking about Easter egg hunts, packed church services, and big Sunday meals shared around the table.

Easter in Texas isn’t just about candy-filled eggs. It’s about gathering generations together. Grandparents, parents, kids, all celebrating side by side. It’s one of those times of year when faith, tradition, and family all meet in the same room. And I can hardly wait.

Whether you observe Lent deeply or simply cherish the Easter traditions, Ash Wednesday is the quiet beginning of something meaningful.

In a fast-moving world, it’s a reminder to slow down, reflect, and prepare your heart. And if you see someone with ashes on their forehead this week, you’ll now know exactly what it means.okay
