I can still remember walking into Robert E. Lee Elementary School here and quietly scanning the classroom to see how many other kids had the ash cross on their foreheads. If you grew up Catholic in Texas as I did, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Especially in Abilene, a city with so many churches.
That small, simple cross made from ashes meant something. It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t flashy. But it was powerful.
As a matter of fact, I, Rudy “Fearless” Fernandez, served as an altar boy until I was 18 years old. I was even awarded and knighted as the White Knight of the Altar. That experience shaped me in ways I still carry today.
Ash Wednesday isn’t just another date on the calendar. It marks the beginning of Lent, a season of reflection, discipline, and preparation leading up to Easter Sunday. And here in Texas, faith and family still matter.

Easter in Texas isn’t just about candy-filled eggs. It’s about gathering generations together. Grandparents, parents, kids, all celebrating side by side. It’s one of those times of year when faith, tradition, and family all meet in the same room. And I can hardly wait.
