As a father of eight wonderful children, I've received some amazing Father's Day gifts over the years. I've also received a few that made me smile, say thank you, and quietly place on a shelf where they still sit today.
Before I go any further, let me say this: every gift from my children means something to me. The fact that they thought about Dad is what really matters.

Unless Dad wears a tie every day, chances are it will spend most of its life hanging in the closet. Funny? Maybe. Useful? Not always.

Every dad needs them, but Father's Day probably isn't the day we're hoping to unwrap them. Save those for the regular shopping trips.

Many dads enjoy tools, but most of us are pretty particular about what we use. A bargain-bin gadget often ends up in a drawer after the first use.

Coffee mugs, keychains, and T-shirts can be thoughtful, especially when they come from your children. What makes them special isn't the item itself—it's the memory attached to it.

What Dad Really Wants
After raising eight children, I've learned something about Father's Day. The older I get, the less I care about what's inside the box. What I treasure most is time.
A phone call from one of my kids. A family dinner. A visit from the grandkids. A photo that captures a memory we'll never get back.
