Nothing signals the arrival of Spring in the Concho Valley like the arrival of hummingbirds. Every year you can set your calendar to “Spring” when the hummers arrive at the Hummer House. Situated just 18 miles south of San Angelo in Christoval, Texas, The Hummer House Bed and Breakfast is the perfect vista for the glorious arrival of hummingbirds.

There are nearly a dozen hummingbird species that frequent the state. The Rufous Hummingbirds migrate thousands of miles every year, passing across the Gulf Of Mexico to their wintering grounds in Mexico and Central America.

Along with Rufous, you can also find Ruby-throated hummingbirds, the most seen species in Texas. We are also visited by black-chinned hummingbirds, Lucifers, broad-tailed, Anna’s, buff-bellied, calliope, costas, blue throated and broad billed hummingbirds.

Many bird enthusiasts will tell you that Hummer House and their Camp Discovery offers the best opportunity anywhere to see the black-chinned hummingbirds.
At Hummer House, you can enjoy a rustic Bed and Breakfast experience among an immersive hummingbird environment. The spring fed South Concho River is a natural flyway for thousands of hummingbirds and other birds also. Over 161 species and 54-thousand birds have been banded and studied there.

This year, the first male hummingbirds are already arriving. By mid-April, the sound of beating hummingbird wings is all around. You can visit the observation room, which is open Saturdays beginning in April through July from 9a until 2p.

While The Hummer House is a great place to enjoy the hummingbirds that pass through our region, you can also enjoy these whimsical birds right in the comfort of your own backyard. Hummingbird feeders are available in a variety of styles at home improvement or hardware stores. Hummingbird nectar is easy to create, just one cup of sugar to four cups of water. Make sure you boil the water and sugar to eliminate impurities. Also, be sure to keep your feeder clean, as black mold can sicken your feathered friends. Careful, hummingbird feeding is infectious. You won’t ever want to stop.
