Granger Smith’s Wife, Amber, Reflects on ‘the Hardest Month of Our Lives’ After Son’s Death
One month after the tragic death of her 3-year-old son, River, Granger Smith's wife Amber turned to social media to reflect on "the hardest month of our lives," sharing a series of photos that show him a very special light.
"I couldn’t sleep last night so I was going through photos of River. I noticed so many with this light around him that I never really took notice of before," she wrote to accompany the pictures, all of which show a noticeable light surrounding the boy in various settings.
"He always said 'when I get bigger I reach the light,'" she writes. "I know he probably meant the light switch, but it still makes me smile and still gives me a bit of hope. He’s definitely reaching the light now," she says, adding the symbol of a cross.
"One month. The hardest month of our lives," she reflects. "But we are here. One month closer to seeing him again."
Granger Smith turned to social media on June 6 to give his fans what he termed the "unimaginable news" that 3-year-old River had died. A representative for the "Damn Strait" singer confirmed that River drowned at the family's home in Texas.
Smith has resumed his live performance schedule, and he gave a powerful tribute to River at the 2019 Country LakeShake Festival in Chicago on June 23 with an emotional performance of "Heaven Bound Balloons." He also showed off a new tattoo bearing his late son's name at the festival.
Granger Smith Pays Tribute to Late Son River Smith
The couple have been carrying their son's legacy forward by raising money in his name through the sale of a tribute T-shirt. They gave a check for $218,791 to Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin on June 25. The staff at the medical center treated River after his accident, and they also treated his family with great compassion.
The River tribute T-shirts are currently sold out, but the Smiths plan to design a new one that they'll offer for sale in the fall to raise more money in his memory. In the meantime, donate directly to Dell Children's here.
