‘Frozen 2’ Shatters Record for Thanksgiving Box Office
Some things never change for the Frozen franchise: The sequel is looking like it’s just as big of a blockbuster as the original.
Over the Thanksgiving weekend, the new film, Frozen II, continued to dominate the box office. Its estimated gross of $85 million from Friday to Saturday shatters the previous record (via Box Office Mojo) of $74.1 million set in 2013 by The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. It’s also on track to make about $128 million over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday, which would also be a record. (The current best for that period is also The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, with $109 million. The Hunger Games franchise was an absolute juggernaut.)
Here’s the estimated weekend top ten for Thanksgiving 2019 from Box Office Guru:
- Frozen II - $85.2 million
- Knives Out - $27.0 million
- Ford v Ferrari - $13.2 million
- A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood - $11.8 million
- Queen & Slim - $11.7 million
- 21 Bridges - $5.8 million
- Playing With Fire - $4.2 million
- Midway - $3.9 million
- Joker - $2.0 million
- Last Christmas - $1.9 million
Frozen II still has a ways to go to match the original film’s massive $1.2 billion worldwide box office total. But if it keeps breaking box-office records through the rest of the holiday season, it might get there.
