First Canned Beer In U.S. Went On Sale 82 Years Ago
Today beer in cans is something most of us take for granted, however, in 1935 it was a big deal! This first, was a partnership between the American Can Company and the Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company and took place on January 24th, 1935, in Richmond, Virginia.
Back in 1909, the American Can Company made it's first attempt at canned beer but it was not successful. Then came Prohibition and the company had to wait it out for nearly 14 years. This gave them time to perfect a pressurized can, along with a special coating to prevent the carbonated beer from chemically reacting with the tin can.
Krueger's Finest Beer and Kruegers Cream Ale were the first to use cans and the response was so good that it forced the big named brewers, Anheuser-Busch, Pabst and Schlitz to do the same.
Consumers loved beer in cans because they didn't have to pay a deposit on bottles. Cans were more durable and convenient to stack and took less time to get good and cold. It was a win-win for everyone.
How about raising a frosty can, sometime today, and celebrate this great American accomplishment. Cheers!
