Chris Stapleton Joins Justin Timberlake Onstage in Nashville for ‘Say Something’ [Watch]
Chris Stapleton joined Justin Timberlake onstage at his headlining gig in Nashville on Wednesday night (May 9) for a rousing performance of their duet, "Say Something."
Timberlake performed at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville as part of his tour in support of his most recent album, Man of the Woods, on which he explores some acoustic and country-themed music. The Memphis native is a Nashville transplant, having moved to the rural Music City suburb of Leiper's Fork several years ago, and according to Nashville's Tennessean newspaper, "Say Something" was one of the highlights of his set when Stapleton appeared onstage without introduction to perform the song with Timberlake.
Unforgettable Chris Stapleton Moments
It was not a particularly unexpected appearance; Stapleton went from being a critically respected, but little-known singer-songwriter to overnight stardom after he teamed with Timberlake to perform "Tennessee Whiskey" at the 2015 CMA Awards, at which he also made an unprecedented sweep of the major categories. That appearance rocketed his debut solo album, Traveller, to the top of the top of the charts, and he has subsequently become one of the most consistent best-selling artists in country music.
That performance also took place at the Bridgestone Arena, and according to the Tennessean, Wednesday night marked the first time the two shared that stage since that memorable evening, though they have collaborated live several times in the meantime.
In reference to that night, Timberlake and Stapleton segued from "Say Something" into a bit of "Tennessee Whiskey" during their performance on Wednesday, with Timberlake remarking to Stapleton, "Now you know we can’t let you leave without playing this song." The two led the wildly enthusiastic Bridgestone audience in a singalong of the song, which was first popularized by George Jones.
