It's a category that has historically showcased a cross-genre slate of artists: Best American Roots Performance. In the past, winners of this Grammy Awards category have included the Alabama Shakes, Sarah Jarosz and more. This year -- as always -- the competitors are fiercely talented.

"Kick Rocks," by Sean Ardoin, is an unapologetically upbeat, blues-driven tune from his Kreole Rock and Soul album. "Saint James Infirmary Blues," meanwhile, features piano virtuoso Jon Batiste with his band Stay Human in a phenomenal performance of a song originally recorded by Louis Armstrong.

Brandi Carlile's "The Joke" is a poignant and eloquent message about fitting in and standing up. But "All on My Mind" is a driving, gritty tune by Anderson East, co-written by the artist and pop star Ed Sheeran, along with Johnny McDaid and Aaron Raitiere.

"Last Man Standing" is the title track to Willie Nelson's latest album. The tongue-in-cheek tune is an ode to the country icon's illustrious career and late musical buddies.
