They've been begging. Pleading. Even making promises you know they won't keep. Your kids would say just about anything to get you to agree to get a kitten. You've finally given in. But before you actually make a trip to your local animal shelter, there are some important things to consider.

If you are thinking about adopting a adult cat or a kitten, there are a few things to keep in mind when making your decision. The first thing to consider is if you have children in the house, and their ages. If you do have young children in the home then a adult cat is a better choice. Kids can accidently get rough with fragile, young kittens and one fo two things can happen, according to the America Humane Society,

which can result in injuries to the kitty and/or a fearful, skittish adult cat. Similarly, young kittens have particularly sharp teeth and claws, which can accidentally injure delicate young children.

The next decision you will have to make is where you are going to get your cat or kitten. Will you be adopting from the animal shelter, a volunteer group, buying online, newspaper ad, etc. There are many different options. We always like to encourage folks to adopt from your town if possible. Here in San Angelo, you have many different options:

After you have decided how you will add this new furbaby into your family, you have several different options. You can go pick out your pet, spending time with each cat or kitten to see if your personalities mesh, which is what we recommend. After you get to know them, fill out the adoption forms, and then if you are approved, you are ready to bring that sweetheart home.
Make sure you have everything you need for your new cat or kitten. Litter box, kitty litter, appropriate food, toys, and other tools to make sure your new friend feels at home and has everything they will need in your new environment. Remember, if you are bringing a new addition into your family, make sure everyone (kids and other animals) have a chance to introduce themselves to your new pet in a safe way. Enjoy!
