Saturday, September 7, 2013, at approximately 1:30 a.m., San Angelo Police were dispatched to the area of 6th St. and N. Chadbourne to investigate the report of a motor vehicle accident with injuries.
Upon arrival, police were directed to a 2013 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup where an unconscious male with visible injuries was located partially outside the vehicle on the passenger’s side.  San Angelo Fire Department Medics arrived and transported the 24-year-old victim to a nearby hospital for treatment of incapacitating injuries.  His condition is unknown at this time.  The driver of the Dodge truck was located and reported as uninjured.  He was identified as Rafael J. Martinez of San Angelo.

Police also located a second vehicle involved in the collision, a 2007 Toyota Tundra pickup.  The driver, a 54-year-old San Angelo resident, received incapacitating injuries because of the crash.  He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.  His condition is unknown at this time.

Officers at the scene suspected Martinez to be intoxicated at the time of the crash.  A DWI S.T.E.P. enforcement officer (Selective Traffic Enforcement Program) with the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office arrived and conducted standardized field sobriety tests on Martinez.  The deputy determined Martinez was intoxicated.  Please contact the Sheriff’s Office for additional information regarding the DWI investigation.

Subsequent to the crash investigation, police learned Martinez was traveling eastbound on 6th St. with his passenger when he ran a red light and collided with the Toyota Tundra that was already in the intersection, northbound on N. Chadbourne St.

Martinez was transported to the Tom Green County Jail and charged with Intoxication Assault with a Vehicle causing Serious Bodily Injury.
