Two new Texas Tech University West Texas Mesonet (WTM) Weather Stations were recently installed at Fort Chadbourne and Fort McKavett.  These West Texas Mesonet Stations (WTM) are invaluable to the National Weather Service and to all others who use this near real time data.  A mesonet station records weather observations at various levels. This data is transmitted to the web every 1 to 5 minutes and can be accessed at the following website:  http://www.mesonet.ttu.edu/

Texas Tech University installed these stations in data-sparse areas. The map above shows where the new, current and future stations are located within the NWS San Angelo County Warning Area.  The two additional mesonet stations are planned to be installed in Clyde and at Fort Lancaster.

Meteorologists at the National Weather Service use a variety of data sources when looking at current conditions. National Weather Service uses this near real time WTM data to prepare forecasts, advisories and warnings.  Wes Burgett is the lead installer for the WTM and has installed numerous stations across a large part of West Texas.  Forecasters from NWS Lubbock and San Angelo often assist Wes with these installations.
