For the reputation that San Angelo has, we're surprised that there aren't more country dance halls here. There is so much Texas and Red Dirt music that comes this way, you'd think there would be a legendary dance hall that had been established years ago. You find them all over Texas, like Gruene Hall, Billy Bob's, Schroeder Hall, The Old Coupland Inn & Dance Hall, Broken Spoke, and so many more. Some were established as far back as the late 1800's.

Midnight Rodeo San Angelo

However, we do have a mainstay when it comes to live Texas and Red Dirt musicians coming in to San Angelo to perform. Midnight Rodeo has provided a great venue to see artists like Casey Donahew, Wade Bowen, Randy Rogers, Kyle Park, Jason Eady, Cory Morrow, and so many more. There has even been some big time Nashville musicians that have graced their stage: Dustin Lynch, Thomas Rhett, Casey James, and Olivia Lane. Over the years we've seen up and comers get to open for the big time independent artists. One great moment was seeing our very own local boys, the Judson Cole Band, going from playing gigs in tiny pubs, to opening for Kyle Park, to finally headlining at Midnight Rodeo.

Southern Skyy

But, there is some good news. There is a new dance hall that has opened up in San Angelo if you are looking for a change of pace. Southern Skyy, 2408 Vanderventer (right across from Angelo State University), has just opened up, and is making a splash. Before you make any snap judgments, it's not just the same ol' same ol' place that has seen many different businesses come and go. The entire building got revamped, and you will be in for a surprise. There will be Texas music bands, open mic nights, and karaoke nights. Speaking of live music, this Friday, May 1st, Justin Ross of Big Casino will be playing an acoustic set live on stage. Then, next Saturday, May 9th, Black Dutch Sioux will be here ready to rock.

San Angelo VFW

You can never go wrong with the San Angelo VFW, either. They consistently bring in Texas bands designed to get your boots on the floor, like Jody Nix and the Texas Cowboys, Case Hardin, Ludy Havlak, and there was even an evening of Polka Dancing. For all you young'ns who may not know what that is, check out this video. The events are sometimes BYOB, so check out their Facebook page to see what they've got going on on Friday nights.
