Helping Hands is still seeking volunteer teams to help with its Spring Blitz work day on Saturday, April 13th.  The teams will assist in restoring the homes of low-income elderly homeowners to help make them safe, secure and weatherproof.

Currently, the organization has 14 volunteer teams, but with more help, would be able to assist at least 30 homeowners in April.  Helping Hands would like to know who the Team Captains will be by Friday, February 1st so that the packets for Home Selection Night on February 4th will be ready.   The Team Captains can continue to fill their teams past this date.  Teams are generally made up of 10-15 people.

Anyone can volunteer to help!  Churches, civic organizations, businesses, and other groups are encouraged to sign up.   Team Captains will get the opportunity to choose the home that best suits the skills on their team.  Typical repairs can include painting, caulking, weather stripping, replacing window screens, installing insulation, light plumbing work, repairing floors and yard clean-up.  Individuals or teams interested in volunteering can contact the Helping Hands Office at (325)227-6753 to sign up.

“The volunteers are what helped make the previous programs so successful and able to serve so many homeowners in the past,” said Herbert.  “In October, the lives of 30 elderly homeowners were impacted in a positive way by having repairs done on their homes which made it possible for them to be safer and more secure in their homes.  The work was done by 35 volunteer teams from all walks of life who generously gave of their time to help their neighbors in need,” said Herbert.  “With all of us working together, we can definitely make a difference in the lives of our fellow citizens.”

Helping Hands is the re-creation of a previous project called Rebuilding Together, which was formerly known as Christmas in April.  Helping Hands is a program under the auspices of Galilee Community Development Corporation.  The organization receives funding from the City of San Angelo Community Development Block Grant, from the City of San Angelo Development Corporation (COSADC), and from a United Way Venture Grant.  Other sponsors are City Lumber and Wholesale and Rust Street Ministries.

“Let’s all work together – San Angelo style – to help our elderly neighbors in need.”
