This weekend's football action brought us big wins for some, soggy weather for most, and a lost weekend for others.

Mickey Scoot and the Central Bobcats offense continued to roll with their 54-21 win over Odessa High. They are now 2-0 in district play and 4-0 overall. As for Mickey Scott, he is having one of those seasons that a young quarterback dreams of. In just 4 games this season, Scott has amassed 1,673 total yards, while accounting for 22 touchdowns. That is an average of 418 yards and 5 1/2 touchdowns per game! If those averages hold up, we could be looking at an undefeated regular season and a second district championship in three years.

As for the Lake View Chiefs, their 42-7 win on Friday night over Midland Greenwood was a huge statement about where this program is. It was also the first time that both Central and Lake View won on the same night since 2005. After a big week 1 win (the obnoxiously titled week 0 is actually the opening week) over Ft. Stockton, the Chiefs finally got to stop talking about their 9-game losing streak, or their 4-year road losing streak.  Unfortunately, after getting rolled by Big Springs the following week 48-0, the talk was that these Chiefs are the same as last year's. You might recall that Lake View won their second game of season last year over the same Ft. Stockton. They went on to lose all of their remaining games. On Friday the Chiefs' coaches and players said loudly, "We are not the same team"! As for me, I am looking forward to seeing what the rest of the season brings for these Chiefs.

As for the rain...the absolutely needed and appreciated rain. No one will utter a single complaint about rain in this area, except when it comes to football. The rain took one of the biggest games this weekend, as #11 Mason vs #12 Christoval was cancelled.  I was curious to see how Mason would rebound from their first regular season loss in 3 years. I was curious to see if Christoval could legitimize their young season with a big win over Mason. Instead, we will see Mason try and bounce back against San Saba, and the Cougars will get ready for a big game with 3-0 TLCA. Other games that were cancelled were Irion Co vs Junction and Menard vs Rocksprings.

Other action included #4 Wall Hawks beating 3A Sweetwater 42-28, while Grape Creek fell to 0-4 in a tough fought game against Ozona 39-26. Odessa Permian was able to get its first win of the season against a struggling Abilene High 24-14.

Now for Pick 'Em:

Here’s how it works:

Every week I will post the games to pick. I will choose 3 local games. There will be a favorite and an underdog, based on Max Preps state rankings. To play, you need to submit your picks below along with your name and e-mail address (so that I can contact you when you win your free stuff). For every correct pick you get 1 point. Also. If you correctly pick an underdog to win, you get an additional 1 point. I will also choose one of the games for a tiebreaker. When you submit your picks, also give me your tiebreaker final score. Each week the person who has the most points and the closest final score will win $10 giftcard from Chili’s Bar and Grill and one additional point.

At the end of the season, the person who has the most points will get a Dinner for 4 at the Chili’s Bar and Grill with the option of having KGKL and the Scoreboard Show DJs join you. Don’t worry, we won’t eat your free dinners.

So send in your submissions. Only 1 submission a week! And let’s see if you are the high school football expert…
