For fans of high school football, right now is a great time to be in the Concho Valley. With several teams having punched their ticket to the playoffs and others with a chance to clinch in their last game of the season this week, there is a chance for some deep playoff runs. For the purpose of this blog, we are going to take a look at a couple of teams who have already secured a place in the postseason.

Let's start off with what has been the big story so far this season. What? Did you think I was talking about Mickey Scott and the Central Bobcats? Nope! My big story is the TLCA Eagles...Now I know that the Eagles showed last year that they were not the same team that had gone winless the two previous seasons, going 6-4 under first-year head coach David Taylor and with a chance to make the playoffs in the last game of the season. But after Coach Taylor left in the off-season, no one really knew which direction the program would go. So the school turned to Principal Johnny Burleson to lead this talented group of young men, and help them finish what they started.

And finish they have!  Currently sitting at 8-0 and looking to finish off the perfect season against Bronte this Friday night, the Eagles have already clinched their first district championship and their first playoff birth in team history. The Eagles are not just winning, they're winning big. They have beat their opponents this season by an average of over 30 points per game. This should be a fun team to follow as they get their first taste of postseason play.

As for the Bobcats...Mickey Scott and the boys have San Angelo fired up for football this season. Except for a hiccup against lowly Tascosa, Central has been dominant. Starting out the season by scoring 71 and 84 points in their first two games, the bobcats put District 2 on notice. Now after their first win in 19 years against Abilene High, and their first win in 15 years against Permian, the Bobcats have a chance to win their second district championship in 3 years. They play Midland Lee at San Angelo stadium this Friday to decide the district championship. Like TLCA, this should be a fun team to watch come playoff time.

For the Water Valley Wildcats, perfect regular seasons and district championships are becoming old news. The Wildcats look to finish off their fourth 10-0 regular season in a row. It's been the second round of the playoffs that have been a problem for the Wildcats.  That's when they run up against teams like Throckmorton or Ira. But this year the Wildcats have a couple of huge wins against top ranked opponents with wins over #10 Grandfalls-Royalty and #3 Follett. So the Wildcats should be ready for tougher competition.

This is only 3 stories, and there are many more...Can the Wall Hawks build on their run to the semi-finals last year, and bring home the trophy this year?...Can Christoval make some noise in the playoffs? Their only loss came to the previously mentions TLCA Eagles...How about Sterling City?...or Robert Lee? And as I said earlier, we are only concentrating on the teams that have already clinched. Next week, the story made be the Lake View Chiefs who have a chance to clinch a playoff spot against Hereford on Friday night. We can only hope.

Now for Pick ‘Em:

Here’s how it works:

Every week I will post the games to pick. I will choose 3 local games. There will be a favorite and an underdog, based on Max Preps state rankings. To play, you need to submit your picks below along with your name and e-mail address (so that I can contact you when you win your free stuff). For every correct pick you get 1 point. Also. If you correctly pick an underdog to win, you get an additional 1 point. I will also choose one of the games for a tiebreaker. When you submit your picks, also give me your tiebreaker final score. Each week the person who has the most points and the closest final score will win $10 giftcard from Chili’s Bar and Grill and one additional point.

At the end of the season, the person who has the most points will get a Dinner for 4 at the Chili’s Bar and Grill with the option of having KGKL and the Scoreboard Show DJs join you. Don’t worry, we won’t eat your free dinners.
