The Office of Development and Alumni Relations oversees all of ASU’s fundraising efforts for academics, athletics, construction, scholarships and other university programs through the ASU Foundation, Ram Club, Alumni Association, President’s Circle and Oaks Society. Akin first joined the staff as a development officer for academics in December 2010.

ASU President Brian J. May said, “Under the direction of Ms. Akin, Angelo State University has raised more money in the last three years than any other time in our history. This promotion brings Ms. Akin in line with her colleagues at other Texas regional institutions who perform similar duties as vice presidents.”

Since taking over direction of the Office of Development and Alumni Relations, Akin has overseen the latter stages of ASU’s first capital campaign that surpassed its $35 million goal in 2013, as well as three straight years of record fundraising efforts. Monetary gifts and donations to ASU reached $12.8 million for the 2013-14 fiscal year, $15.3 million for 2014-15, and $15.8 million for 2015-16.

In both 2015 and 2016, ASU received a Sustained Excellence Award in Fundraising from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), an international organization of higher education professionals in the fields of alumni relations, development, communications and marketing. ASU also received 2015 and 2016 Overall Performance and Overall Improvement awards from CASE.

“It is an honor to join the leadership team at Angelo State in a greater capacity,” Akin said. “The loyalty displayed by our alumni, friends and community, combined with ASU’s unique reputation for academic and athletic excellence, has enhanced the generosity towards our mission. We will continue to develop the alumni and philanthropic engagement that strengthens the educational opportunities at Angelo State.”

Prior to joining ASU, Akin served as advertising and marketing director for the San Angelo Standard-Times from 2008-10 and as an account executive from 2002-05. She also worked previously as online sales director for Granite Publications in Taylor.

Also active in the community, Akin is currently chairman of the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and is on the board of Sonora Bank. She has also served on the boards of Goodwill Industries, Leadership San Angelo, Sonrisas Therapeutic Riding and the San Angelo Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Akin holds both her Bachelor of Business Administration and Master of Public Administration from ASU.
