The first Saturday in May is always the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. This year's "Run for the Roses" is the 138th.  It's been a tradition since 1875.  Thoroughbred racing has been a favorite sport in Kentucky since it became our 15th state in 1792.

Up to 20 3-year-old thoroughbreds answer the call to the post for this race.

If you want to place a legal wager on the race here in Texas, head for the Race Barn at Highway 16 south at the main entrance to the Gillespie Fairgrounds in Fredericksburg, about a 3 hour drive from San Angelo.

It's always fun to watch and see all the celebrities that turn out for the race but my favorite part is checking out those fancy hats those ladies wear to the big event.  I get a kick out of them.  It's a hoot!
