Ft. Bliss Suspends Adopt A Soldier Program

FORT BLISS, Texas (AP) — A West Texas post has suspended its Adopt-A-Soldier holiday program because of fewer young, unmarried soldiers needing a place to go for a family meal.
The El Paso Times (http://bit.ly/1fkuMdC ) reported Thursday that Fort Bliss cited changing demographics at the installation.

Public affairs officer Jean Offutt says there just weren't enough soldier volunteers to meet the needs of the community who wanted them in their homes.

Offutt says people in El Paso have always embraced the program, which goes back at least 25 years. Up to 70 percent of the soldiers at Fort Bliss are married.

Offutt says the suspended program will be re-evaluated later to see if there's more interest or in case Fort Bliss starts getting more single soldiers.
