If you are celebrating today, congratulations.  It's also the anniversary of the first country music show to play New York City's Carnegie Hall.  It was 1947 and headliners included, Minnie Pearl, Roy Acuff, and Ernest Tubb.  Ticket prices ranged from $1.20 up to $3.60.  What a bargain!

There are numerous stories as to who invented this American favorite, most date back as far as the 1920's.

Lionel Sternberger, claims to have invented it 1926.  While working at "The Rite Spot" sandwich shop, in Pasadena, California, he dropped a slice of American cheese on a sizzling hamburger.

In 1928, a cheeseburger appeared on a menu at "O'Dell's", a restaurant, in Los Angeles.

Kaelin's Restaurant, in Louisville, Kentucky, says they invented it in 1934.

Research shows that a trademark for the name "cheeseburger" was awarded to Louis Ballast, of the Humpty Dumpty Drive-In, in Denver, Colorado, in 1935.

Regardless of whom ever came up with the first one, we all share a delight with em' for lunch or dinner.  It's an American original, topped off with a piece of cheese.  By the way, any piece of cheese will work and they are even better when you serve them up with fries.
