It's National Aviation Day!

In 1939, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, issued a presidential proclamation designating August 19th to be National Aviation Day.  That date just happened to be Orville Wright's birth date.  Orville was born August 19, 1871.  He was still alive when this proclamation was issued and continued to live nine more years until his death in 1948.

Orville Wright and his brother, Wilbur, were pioneer aviators.  They ran a bicycle shop in the state of Ohio, and it was there they developed the idea of a machine that was heavier than air and could fly.

Orville became the first person to successfully fly an airplane with his first flight on December 17th, 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.  That flight would soon change the skies forever.

August 19th, is sometimes known as Wright Brother's Day, and has also been used to honor other aviation and space pioneers over the years.

Now, you know a little history pertaining to National Aviation Day.
