Here in America, comics as a print medium, have existed since 1842 with the printing of The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck.  Even though it was in hardcover, it is the first known American prototype comic book.

What is believed to be the first real comic book in the United States, Famous Funnies, appeared in 1933.  It was a collection of reprinted newspaper comic strips which had established many of the story telling devices used in comics today.

Despite the name "comic book", not all are humorous and actually feature all kinds of different stories.

Some comic books have great value as collectors items.  So, tell your mom not to throw them away, because down the road, they could be worth their weight in gold.

You might want to buy a comic book, read a comic book or trade a comic book with your friends to celebrate this special day.
