Birthdays And Anniversaries For September 17th + It’s Constitution Day And Citizenship Day
If today is your birthday, congratulations, you share this date with an icon of country music, Hank Williams. Hank was born in Mount Olive, Alabama, in 1923. One of the genre's most influential singer and songwriters, he was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in its very first induction in 1961. It's Constitution Day!
It commemorates the adoption and signing of the Constitution of the United States by the U. S. Constitutional Convention on this date back in 1787.
It's also Citizenship Day!
This day started out as "I Am An American Day" in 1940, when it was created and named as an official day by President Franklin Roosevelt. Congress designated the third Sunday in May for the celebration. Congress then changed the name to "Citizenship Day", on February 29, 1952, and moved it's observance to September 17th to coincide with "Constitution Day".
In 2004, it was changed again to Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. As the late Paul Harvey would say, "and now you know the rest of the story".
