Billy Gilman is the Season 11 runner-up of The Voice. The former child star placed second during the finale on Tuesday night (Dec. 13)

Gilman took a seemingly unlikely path to this new career path, auditioning for the iconic reality singing competition in an attempt to shake off people's preconceived notions. He scored his first hit with "One Voice" in 2000, when he was just 11 years old, but later struggled to re-establish himself as an adult performer in the genre after his voice changed.

His stellar cover of Adele‘s “When We Were Young” in September served as his audition for The Voice,  which introduced many fans to his impeccable vocal skills as an adult. Gilman went on to a run on Adam Levine‘s team in which he has turned in one jaw-dropping vocal performance after another, including Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror,” Rachel Platten’s “Fight Song,Queen‘s “The Show Must Go On” and Adele’s “All I Ask,” most recently delivering Frank Sinatra's "My Way" and his own new song, "Because of Me," on Monday night's (Dec. 12) show.

He competed against Sundance Head, Josh Gallagher and We McDonald in the finale, with Head ultimately winning. But the 28-year-old singer can finally say he's left his childhood stardom behind him, with a high-profile finish on one of the biggest singing competitions on television under his belt.
